Parent / Student Services - Preparing for School

PARENT-INFANT and PARENT-TODDLER PLAYGROUP PROGRAMME

  1. Ensure that your child has had a good meal (e.g. breakfast, lunch or milk and snacks) and a good rest (i.e. have enough sleep the night before or during the day) before arriving at school.
  2. Dress your child in comfortable clothes that he/she can play in. Light-coloured, expensive or branded clothes are discouraged because they may be splattered with paint as your child plays.
  3. Likewise, as a parent, please dress comfortably as sessions are likely to involve a range of physical activity and movement.
  4. Agree beforehand who will be in class with your child when more than one adult accompanies him/her to school. Unless the circumstances prove otherwise, only one adult per child is allowed in the class at any one time to prevent crowding.
  5. Keep younger and older children who are not enrolled for the PlayGroup programme out of the class to prevent crowding. They should be accompanied by an adult in the lobby.
  6. Arrive 5-10 minutes before class starts so that your child can settle down and warm up. You can also take the opportunity to settle any outstanding administrative matters with the School Administrator.
  7. Park your child's stroller in a way that will not congest the lobby. Fold it up and lean it against the wall if possible.
  8. Take off your child's socks before entering any of the teaching areas in the school, so that he/she will not slip accidentally.
  9. Participate in the Music Time by singing along with Educators and guiding your child in the actions. The catchy songs can be learned very quickly on the spot.
  10. Guide your child at each of the Experiential Learning Stations according to the learning goals indicated by the Senior Educator as you enter the Main PlayRoom. All the Educators will spend time individually with each parent-child pair to help and facilitate the learning process.
  11. Turn off all handphones and pagers before class. If you have to use the handphone, please do so outside the PlayRoom.

FIRST STARTS, BRIGHT STARTS & HEAD STARTS PRESCHOOL PROGRAMMES

  3. Pack a small backpack or bag for your child, containing:
    - A change of clothes, in case he/she gets wet or dirty during the lesson
    - A change of diapers for children who are not yet toilet-trained
    - Wet tissues
    - A small bottle of water and a small plastic box of snacks, just in case he/she needs some munchies while waiting to be picked up after class
  4. Label your child's backpack, water bottle and snack box clearly with his/her name.
  5. Arrive 5-10 minutes before class starts so that your child can settle down and warm up. You can also take the opportunity to settle any outstanding administrative matters with the School Administrator.
  6. Park your child's stroller in a way that will not congest the lobby. Fold it up and lean it against the wall if possible.
  7. Take off your child's socks before entering any of the teaching areas in the school, so that he/she will not slip accidentally.
  8. Be punctual (or arrive a few minutes early) when you are picking up your child after class. This is particularly important for children who are attending the "Bright Starts" Programme for the first time, because you will help them to trust you (i.e. Mummy is really there waiting for me after school as she promised) and minimise Separation Anxiety.

ALL THERAPY PROGRAMMES

  3. Keep younger and older children who are not enrolled for the programme out of the class to prevent disruption. They should be accompanied by an adult in the lobby.
  4. Arrive 5-10 minutes before class starts so that your child can settle down and warm up. You can also take the opportunity to settle any outstanding administrative matters with the School Administrator.
  5. Take time to calm your child down before joining the class if he/she is crying, screaming, throwing a tantrum or otherwise upset. Do not force him/her into the class while he/she is still unsettled.
  6. Park your child's stroller (if any) in a way that will not congest the lobby. Fold it up and lean it against the wall if possible.
  7. Take off your child's socks before entering any of the teaching areas in the school, so that he/she will not slip accidentally.
  8. With the lead teacher’s consent, sit in during the session to observe what is taught and how your child is managed so that you can learn and reinforce it at home and provide consistency in the learning environment. Take notes to help you.
  9. If it is a group participation class, dress comfortably as sessions are likely to involve a range of physical activity and movement. Agree beforehand who will be in the class with your child. Take turns because only one adult per child is allowed in the class at any one time to prevent crowding.
  10. Participate in the Music Time by singing along with Educators and guiding your child in the actions. The catchy songs can be learned very quickly on the spot.
  11. Guide your child at each of the Experiential Learning Stations according to the learning goals indicated by the Senior Therapist as you enter the Main PlayRoom. Observe what is taught and how your child is managed so that you can learn and reinforce it at home and provide consistency in the learning environment.
  12. Stay in the room until the session is over. Do not enter and leave the room repeatedly as this will distract your child and disrupt his/her learning.
  13. Turn off all handphones and pagers before class.
