Parent-Infant PlayGroup (0-12 mo)

As a gesture of gratitude to all of our current parents who have supported the work of the school over these many years, school-fees will NOT be raised in the academic year 2009. Wee Care will also continue to absorb the Goods & Services Tax (GST).

New families who join Wee Care will pay a Registration fee of $125/- instead of the current $85/- with effect from 1st Jan 09. However, Insurance and Deposit rates will remain the same.

Wee Care's Parent-Infant PlayGroup is a unique programme that allows babies to learn about themselves and the world in which they live. The programme's main philosophy is taken from the views of Vygotsky and Bruner who emphasised the importance of adult input in increasing a child's level of development.

Therefore, parents at Wee Care are encouraged to participate in the learning activities, as an integral part of a triangular model where "partnerships in learning" are reinforced. In turn, our team of specialist educators facilitate in the development of the bonds that are required for motivated, directed and purposeful play.

My Wee Care Experience

Madam Desiree Keh enrolled her daughter, Vanessa, in the Parent-Infant PlayGroup programme at 4 months. She says:

Vanessa, now aged 2 years, has
moved on to the "Bright Starts"
Programme
(above).

"Vanessa, the only child in the family, had the opportunity to interact and socialise with other babies in the PlayGroup. In addition, her caregiver learnt a systematic way to guide Vanessa, especially in the development of gross-motor skills. I was delighted when she could sit up on her own just one month after attending the PlayGroup!"

BENEFITS

The Parent-Infant PlayGroup programme increases the child's ability to relate socially with others. Babies who come to us early have been able to start babbling at a peer by the age of 6 months. By 2 years, many of them have appeared to be more self-confident and articulate.

In addition, the children also seem to have a greater ability to focus on learning tasks, as well as to process the physical and social environment in a more organised manner.

My Wee Care Experience

Dr Hoe Wan Sin and her son, David, joined the Parent-Infant PlayGroup when he was 6 months old. She says:

"I enrolled David in the PlayGroup because I wanted him to start him on a structured learning programme and develop some social skills. After one term, David has indeed shown some progress in social and linguistic development. Furthermore, the educators are patient, kind and always gentle with him."

ACTIVITIES and FORMAT

The Parent-Infant PlayGroup programme encourages babies to learn through structured activities via exploration, manipulation and discovery. A weekly theme provides the backdrop for learning goals and activities that vary from week to week.

Typically, a Parent-Infant PlayGroup session involves the following:

  • Welcome and Music Time
  • Stations for Structured Learning, including Creative Play and Thinking Skills, to provide the child with individual attention in a group setting
  • Soft-Play and Multi-Sensory Learning, for Sensori-Motor Development
  • Snack and Circle Time, for acquiring Social Scripts and Interaction Skills
  • Closing and Good-bye

Outdoor Play and Nature Time is available according the theme for the week and when the weather permits.

The length of each Parent-Infant PlayGroup session is one (1) hour.

PARENT / CAREGIVER INVOLVEMENT

This is essential, in line with the Wee Care philosophy of the importance of adult input in increasing a child's level of development. Involvement is limited to one adult (usually either the father or the mother) per child.

CLASS SIZE and EDUCATOR-CHILD RATIO

Each class can only accommodate a maximum of seven (7) parent-infant pairs, who are led and facilitated by two (2) Wee Care educators.
